3D/Additive Manufacturing

F92: Using Advanced Materials & Processes in 3D Metal Printing (FSAM)

Investigating the Effects of the Solid-State Additive Manufacturing of Ti-6Al-4V
This study explores the Friction Stir Additive Manufacturing (FSAM) of Ti-6Al-4V, a titanium alloy renowned for its high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance, which are critical for aerospace, automotive, and biomedical applications. By employing friction stir welding (FSW) techniques, the research delineates the microstructural evolution and resultant mechanical properties of the alloy post-manufacturing. Comparative analyses with conventional Ti-6Al-4V processing methods reveal significant enhancements in grain refinement and mechanical integrity, attributable to the FSAM process’s unique thermal and mechanical conditions.

Shoring Up Long Lead Time Supply Chain Issues of Forgings and Castings Using Advanced Manufacturing and 3D Metal Printing
Supply Chain issues have plagued manufacturers across multiple industries over the past several years and exposed a vulnerability for domestic production capabilities. The MELD technology solves lead time challenges facing maintenance, lifecycle, new construction, and repair for a variety of industries that are typically dependent on sourcing parts or materials from overseas. These problems commonly manifest in the form of long lead time forgings, castings and parts that tend to have traditional manufacturing complexities.
